The highbush blueberry ‘Patriot’ is one of the most valuable early‑ripening varieties. It is frost‑resistant, produces very large and exceptionally aromatic fruit, and is highly productive. The navy‑blue berries with a light waxy bloom begin to ripen at the beginning of July. Firm and flavourful, they are excellent both as fresh dessert fruit and for processing, and they retain their taste when frozen. It is a long‑lived, easy‑to‑grow plant that rewards with abundant flowering.
Use: Recommended for home gardens and commercial plantations. Thanks to its large, tasty and aromatic fruit, it is ideal for fresh consumption, baking, desserts, freezing and preserves. Growth is moderately strong, reaching 120 cm, and up to 180 cm in optimal conditions. Suitable for cultivation throughout Poland due to its high frost resistance down to –30°C, even –40°C, and its tolerance to root diseases such as phytophthora.
Ripening: An early variety; fruit begins to ripen in mid‑July. It flowers very abundantly, producing white or slightly pink blossoms. Leaves are green, colouring beautifully in autumn before falling for winter.
Fruit: Large, oval, slightly flattened, navy‑blue with a waxy bloom; firm, tasty and very aromatic. Berries form in large, compact clusters; later harvests produce slightly smaller fruit. One shrub can yield up to 9 kg of berries.
Care: Prefers strongly acidic, humus‑rich soil with a pH of 3.5–4. It also tolerates heavier and moist soils. In low‑acidity soil the shrubs become stunted and fail to fruit.
Exposure: Grows best in warm, sunny locations. Requires strong pruning and, due to abundant flowering, thinning of flower clusters.
