The ‘Spartan’ highbush blueberry is a frost‑resistant variety producing very large and exceptionally aromatic fruits. It is highly productive and grows to about 1–2 m. The navy‑blue berries with a light waxy bloom begin to ripen in mid‑July. Firm and tasty, they are excellent as dessert fruit and for preserves, retaining their flavour even after freezing. It is a long‑lived, easy‑to‑grow plant that rewards with abundant and long flowering. Use: This variety is recommended for home gardens and commercial plantations. Thanks to its large, tasty and aromatic fruits, it is ideal for fresh consumption, baking, desserts, freezing and processing. It is suitable for cultivation throughout Poland due to its high frost resistance down to –30 °C, and even –40 °C. Flowering and fruiting: A mid‑early variety, with fruits beginning to ripen in mid‑July. It flowers very abundantly from May, producing white or slightly pink flowers. Leaves are green, turning colour in autumn and falling for winter. The fruits are large, oval, slightly flattened, navy‑blue with a blue waxy bloom, firm, tasty and very aromatic, gathered in large compact clusters; later harvests may produce smaller berries. Care: Prefers strongly acidic soil with pH 3.5–4, rich in humus. This variety also tolerates heavier and wetter soils. In low‑acidity soil, shrubs become stunted and do not fruit. It grows best in warm, sunny locations. Pruning: Requires strong pruning and thinning of flowers due to abundant blooming.
