‘Brigitta’ is an Australian highbush blueberry variety considered one of the most promising large‑fruited cultivars. It is very productive, yielding large, tasty, crunchy berries of excellent quality. It is highly valued for its late fruiting period and its ability to be stored for a long time.
Use: The flavourful berries are recommended primarily for fresh consumption. They also store very well at low temperatures and are suitable for controlled‑atmosphere cold storage. The shrub grows very vigorously and reaches 180–200 cm in height.
Fruiting and flowering: It forms a large number of flower buds evenly distributed along the shoots. White or pink flowers appear in May. This is a late‑ripening variety, beginning to ripen about two weeks after ‘Bluecrop’ and just before ‘Darrow’. Harvest takes place in August. The berries are large, round, firm and crunchy, with a slightly tart flavour. They are light blue, smooth and covered with a waxy bloom. The flesh is green, and the stem scar is small and dry. Blueberries contain no fat or cholesterol. The leaves are small, dark green with a characteristic burgundy tint, sharply directed upwards.
Care: Requires a warm, sunny, wind‑sheltered position. Soil should be acidic (pH 3.5–4), well‑drained, moist and preferably light due to the long growing season. It has good frost resistance down to –24 °C, but because of its Australian origin it has higher heat requirements, and non‑woody shoots may freeze during severe frosts.
