The Bluecrop highbush blueberry is considered the most valuable and the most widely planted variety in the world. It is a medium‑early fruiting shrub producing berries with high nutritional value and low calorie content. Thanks to its firm skin, the fruit is excellent for transport and withstands long shipping very well. It crops abundantly, is frost‑resistant and has very low site requirements. One cup of fresh blueberries covers the daily vitamin C requirement of an adult.
Use: It produces very tasty sweet‑wine‑flavoured berries, recommended especially for fresh consumption due to their content of pectins, minerals and vitamins beneficial in the prevention and treatment of digestive, heart and eye conditions. It is frost‑resistant from –28 °C to –34 °C; only a drop to –7 °C during flowering may reduce yields. Growth is moderately vigorous, with plants reaching 160–200 cm in height.
Flowering: Medium‑sized, jug‑shaped flowers. The petals of unopened buds have a pinkish tint, while older flowers are whitish. The calyx segments are pink and pressed against the corolla. Pedicels are thin, medium‑length, often with a pinkish shade. Leaves are lanceolate, elongated, strongly veined; young leaves have a noticeable pink tint, older ones are deep green.
Ripening and fruiting: A mid‑season variety, ripening in central regions from late July to the first decade of August. The berries are large, spherical, often slightly flattened, gathered in large, loose, uniform clusters. They are light blue with a strong waxy bloom. The flesh is greenish‑yellow, slightly pink under the skin, firm, moderately aromatic, sweet‑wine in flavour, very tasty. Overripe berries may fall off. Very heavy cropping may cause fruit to become smaller, so intensive pruning after fruiting is recommended. Shoots bending under the weight of fruit should be tied. The firm skin may occasionally crack during prolonged rainfall.
Exposure: Sites that warm the soil to 18–21 °C are recommended.
Care: Acidic soil, rich in humus, airy, well‑drained and consistently moist.
Pruning: For several years after planting, remove diseased, weak or broken shoots and shorten new growth.
