Bluejay highbush blueberry belongs to the mid-season varieties, one of its advantages being suitability for mechanical harvesting. It is a perennial plant, easy to grow, rewarding with abundant fruiting. Bluejay is a hybrid of Berkeley and Michigan as well as Pioneer and Taylor. It is a vigorous shrub with medium-sized, light blue fruits, resistant to frost and diseases. It grows vigorously and reaches up to 2 m in height.

Application: The berries of this variety are firm, very aromatic, resistant to dropping and cracking, and are excellent for long-term storage when fresh as well as for all types of preserves. Eating fresh blueberries helps prevent lifestyle diseases, arteriosclerosis, and cancers. In the garden, it can also serve as an ornamental element.

Flowering and fruiting: It blooms relatively late, with white or light pink bell-shaped flowers. The first ripe fruits appear at the end of July, with most ripening in August—about 70% in the first phase. The fruits are round, medium-sized, light blue, smooth, firm, aromatic, and very numerous. They stay on the bush for a long time and are crack-resistant. The leaves are fairly large and light green. Harvested fruits can stay fresh in the fridge for up to 10 weeks.

Care: Requires a sunny location sheltered from the wind. The recommended soil is light, well-drained, and very acidic. The variety is frost-resistant from -28°C to -34°C. Fertilize with blueberry or conifer fertilizer. Before planting, fill the hole with acidic soil and mulch with bark afterward.

Pruning: Requires intensive pruning and proper watering, as it is sensitive to drought, which causes fruit shrinkage.
