‘Bonifacy’ is a very valuable highbush blueberry variety. It is a mid-late ripening fruit shrub producing berries with high dietary value and low calorie content. Thanks to the firm skin, the fruits tolerate transport very well, even over long distances. The variety is very productive, frost-hardy and has low site requirements. A glass of fresh blueberries covers the daily vitamin C requirement of an adult.

Use: The fruits are very tasty with a sweet-wine flavor and are recommended mainly for fresh consumption, especially due to their content of pectins, mineral salts and vitamins, beneficial in the prevention and treatment of digestive, heart and eye diseases. Frost resistance ranges from -28°C to -34°C; only a temperature drop to -7°C during flowering may reduce yields. Growth is moderately strong; plants reach 160–200 cm in height.

Flowering: Flowers are medium-sized, urn-shaped. Bud petals are slightly pink, older flowers become whitish; calyx lobes are pink and adhere to the corolla. Pedicels are thin, of medium length, often pinkish. Leaves are lanceolate, elongated, strongly veined; young leaves have a pinkish tint, older ones are deep green.

Ripening and fruiting: A mid-late ripening variety; in central regions the harvest falls at the end of August and the first decade of September. Fruits are large, spherical, often flattened, gathered in large, loose clusters of uniform size, light blue with an intense waxy bloom. The flesh is greenish-yellow, slightly pink under the skin, firm, moderately aromatic, sweet-wine and very tasty. Overripe fruits may drop. Very heavy cropping may cause fruit size reduction, therefore strong pruning after fruiting is recommended. Shoots bending under the weight of fruits should be tied. The firm skin may occasionally crack during prolonged rains.

Exposure: Warm sites are recommended, allowing the soil to heat up to 18–21°C.

Care: Soil should be acidic, rich in humus, airy, well-drained and constantly moist.

Pruning: For several years after planting, remove diseased, weak and broken shoots and shorten new growth.
