This is a so-called highbush blueberry. 'Darrow' is a fruit shrub of the American blueberry species, characterized by very vigorous growth and late, abundant fruiting. The fruits are very large, about 25 mm in diameter. This variety ripens about 10 days later than 'Bluecrop'. The berries appear and ripen over a longer period. Thanks to their high firmness, they tolerate storage and transport very well. The shrub's shoots are stiff, upright, and very vigorous. Recommended for fresh consumption, freezing, and processing.
Use: A valued variety due to its firm berries, which tolerate transport well and surpass earlier varieties in quality. Suitable for fresh consumption, freezing, and processing. Frost resistance down to -28°C. After a few hours of chilling, the berries become more aromatic. Self-fertile variety that does not require pollinators. Vigorous growth, stiff shoots; shrubs grow up to 130–180 cm tall.
Flowering and fruiting: Blooms late after spring frosts, flowers are white or pink. Very productive variety, fruits ripen from early August. Large, round fruits with light blue color, nice persistent bloom and firm skin, aromatic, sweet and tangy, gathered in loose clusters, with a small stem scar. Leaves are fairly large, elliptical, leathery, dark green, strongly veined and shiny.
Care: Prefers a sunny, wind-sheltered position. Soil should be well-drained, light, fertile, with a pH of 3.5–4, and slightly moist. Mulching the soil around the shrub with sawdust or conifer bark is beneficial.
