Very early, frost-hardy blueberry with firm, aromatic fruits. Strong-growing shrub up to 130–180 cm. Requires acidic soil and a sunny position.
‘Duke’ is a highbush blueberry variety with very strong growth and early, abundant fruiting. It starts to bear fruit about 10 days earlier than ‘Bluecrop’. The fruits vary in size – the first ones are very large, the later ones medium-sized. Thanks to their high firmness, they tolerate storage and transport very well. The shoots are stiff and upright, and the shrub grows very vigorously. This variety is often compared to ‘Bluecrop’. The fruits are suitable for fresh consumption, freezing and processing.
Frost resistance: up to -28°C. After a few hours of cooling, the berries become even more aromatic. Self-fertile variety, does not require pollinators.
Size: very strong growth, stiff shoots; shrubs reach 130–180 cm in height.
Flowering and fruiting: flowers late, after spring frosts; flowers white or pink. Very productive variety. Fruits ripen from the beginning of August. The first fruits are large, round, light blue with a strong waxy bloom and firm skin, aromatic and sweet-wine flavored, gathered in loose clusters. The leaf scar is small. Leaves are fairly large, elliptical, leathery, dark green, strongly veined and glossy.
Care: prefers a sunny, wind-protected location. Soil should be light, fertile, well-drained, acidic (pH 3.5–4) and slightly moist. Mulching the soil around the shrub with sawdust or conifer bark is recommended.
