Black Elder Golden Spark® is a striking ornamental shrub known for its intensely yellow, deeply cut foliage and nectar-rich flowers. It typically reaches 2.5–3 m in height, adding a vivid colour accent to the garden throughout the season. Appearance and decorative features The leaves display golden-yellow tones and release a characteristic aromatic scent when crushed. Mature plants develop furrowed, textured bark that remains attractive even in winter. In May and June, the shrub produces masses of tiny white flowers gathered in wide, plate-like umbels (10–20 cm). The blossoms are strongly fragrant and attract bees and butterflies, making the plant valuable for pollinator-friendly gardens. Fruits and use From August to October, glossy, almost black fruits ripen — small, spherical, about 5 mm in diameter. Although not very numerous, they are edible, healthy and appreciated for homemade preserves. Ideal for juices, liqueurs and wines, and also serve as natural food for birds. Growing requirements The most intense leaf colour appears in full sun. The plant prefers fertile, humus-rich, moderately moist soil but also tolerates sandy and periodically dry substrates. It is hardy, easy to grow and suitable for home gardens as well as urban plantings.
