Japanese Barberry Indian Summer is an ornamental shrub with foliage that changes color throughout the season. In spring the leaves are fresh and bright, in summer they turn intense red, and in autumn they shift to deep fiery tones. The plant produces small yellow flowers and later red berries that remain decorative until winter.
It performs best in full sun, where the foliage develops its strongest coloration. It also grows in partial shade, though the colors may appear more subdued. It prefers well-drained soil and tolerates urban conditions and occasional drought.
Indian Summer is easy to grow and requires no complicated maintenance. In spring it is advisable to remove weakened or damaged shoots to encourage even growth. The shrub responds well to light pruning, which helps maintain its natural form. Fertilization can be limited to early spring if stronger leaf coloration is desired.
This variety works well in borders, color compositions, rock gardens and container plantings. Its changing colors add visual dynamism to any arrangement. Its thorny shoots create a natural protective barrier.
The shrub is fully frost-resistant and does not require winter protection. The berries remain on the shoots even during colder months. It is resistant to diseases and pests, making it very easy to maintain.
