Ottawa Barberry Auricoma is an ornamental shrub with vivid red foliage that creates a strong color accent throughout the season. It grows to about 2–3 meters in height and features a compact, slightly spreading habit. In spring it produces small yellow flowers, and in autumn red berries develop on the shoots, remaining decorative until winter.
The plant performs best in full sun, where the foliage develops its deepest color. It also grows in partial shade, though the leaf color becomes more subdued. It prefers well-drained soil and tolerates urban conditions and occasional drought.
Ottawa Barberry Auricoma is easy to grow and requires no complicated maintenance. In spring it is advisable to remove weakened or damaged shoots to encourage even growth. It responds well to shaping cuts, allowing the desired form to be maintained. Fertilization can be limited to early spring if stronger leaf coloration is desired.
The shrub works well as a specimen plant, in hedges and in color compositions. Thanks to its durability and ornamental qualities it is widely used in home gardens, parks and urban greenery. Its thorny shoots create a natural protective barrier.
The plant tolerates frost well and does not require winter protection. The berries remain on the shoots even during colder months. It is resistant to diseases and pests, making it very easy to maintain.
