Ottawa Barberry ‘Superba’ is a shrub with intensely red foliage that provides a vivid garden accent throughout the season. It reaches about 3 meters in height and forms a wide, dense habit. In spring it produces small yellow flowers, and in autumn red berries develop on the shoots, remaining decorative until winter.
It performs best in full sun, where the foliage gains its deepest color. It also grows in partial shade, though the color becomes more muted. It prefers well-drained soil and tolerates urban conditions and occasional drought.
The plant is easy to grow and requires no complicated maintenance. In spring it is advisable to remove weakened shoots to encourage even growth. It responds well to shaping cuts, allowing the desired form to be maintained. Fertilization can be limited to early spring if stronger leaf coloration is desired.
‘Superba’ works well as a specimen plant, in hedges and in color compositions. Thanks to its durability and ornamental qualities it is widely used in home gardens, parks and urban greenery. Its thorny shoots create a natural protective barrier.
The shrub tolerates frost well and does not require winter protection. The berries remain on the shoots even during colder months. It is resistant to diseases and pests, making it very easy to maintain.
