Berberis × ottawensis ‘Superba’ is an impressive, fast‑growing deciduous shrub with gracefully arching shoots. It usually reaches 3–4 m in height, forming a wide, dense crown. Its greatest ornament are the leaves – large, spatula‑shaped, entire, in an intense dark red colour, covered with a bluish, waxy coating. Thanks to this, the shrub remains decorative throughout the season. In May, small yellow flowers appear, gathered in hanging, raceme‑like clusters. Although tiny, they contrast beautifully with the dark foliage. In autumn, the shrub is adorned with elliptical, bright red fruits (about 8 mm), which remain on the branches throughout winter unless eaten by birds. Cultivation and requirements ‘Superba’ is an exceptionally undemanding plant. Position • Grows best in full sun – this ensures the most intense leaf colour. • Tolerates partial shade, though the foliage becomes paler. Soil • Average garden soil is sufficient. • Performs well in light and moderately poor soils. • Drought‑tolerant and fully frost‑hardy. Care • Responds well to pruning – can be shaped or left in its natural form.
