A slender shrub with a columnar shape. It grows quite quickly, with an annual growth of about 20 cm in length. It reaches a height of 1.5 m and a width of 0.4-0.6 m. Like every barberry, Helmond Pillar is a thorny shrub. The small, seasonal leaves are dark purple with a rounded shape and fall off in winter. Small yellow flowers appear in spring. Edible fruits appear in August and remain on the shrub throughout the winter. The variety is completely frost-resistant and low-maintenance in terms of soil and position. It prefers a warm, sunny, and semi-shady location. It grows well on acidic or moderately alkaline soil.

Blooming – Helmond Pillar blooms yellow from May to June.
The leaves of this variety have one of the darkest colors among all barberries - dark purple. This color turns bright scarlet in the autumn. Thin shoots of the shrub are covered with sharp thorns.

Maturation and fruiting – the shrubs bear fruit at the turn of August and September. Small red fruits, in the shape of slightly oval berries, remain on the shrub even after all the leaves have fallen and persist throughout the winter. The edible fruits are a great delicacy for birds.

Conditions and requirements – Berberis 'Helmond Pillar', like other species representatives, is resistant to low temperatures, not very demanding regarding soil, and very tolerant to pH. However, ideal conditions for this shrub will be sunny or semi-shady positions, fertile, humus-rich, and slightly moist soils.

Care – it is recommended to trim the shoot tips by about 5 cm at least twice a year. The pruning aims to shape and strengthen the shrub. The first cuts are made right after winter to remove dried or broken shoots, the second in summer. Every few years, rejuvenating cuts can be performed by removing the oldest shoots, which will stimulate the plant to grow intensively. Berberis Thunbergii 'Helmond Pillar' is a frost-resistant variety that sheds its leaves in winter. When working with barberries, remember to wear protective gloves due to the sharp thorns of the shrubs.

Usage – Berberis 'Helmond Pillar', due to its shape, blends perfectly with most shrubs and perennials. It is also suitable for hedges, both shaped and wild-growing. Due to its low requirements and high resistance, this variety is often chosen for plantings in urban greenery.
It can be used as a permanent color element in a changing flower bed.
The unusual columnar shape of this variety adds elegance to planting compositions.
Barberries have a compact root system, making them good container plants.
