Blue Agapanthus is a perennial plant from the lily family. It is also known as the African lily. It features long, green, narrow leaves. The flowers, placed on a stiff stalk, form a canopy shape made up of several blue flowers.
The plant requires clayey, fertile, and well-drained soil with the addition of sand. It should be watered abundantly during the growing season. In warmer climates, it is grown in the ground.
It does not tolerate frost and is not cold-hardy enough, so in our climate, it is grown in containers. During the winter period, the plant should be kept in rooms with access to light, where the temperature is between 1–8°C. Watering should be limited during this time.
When planting in pots, the rhizomes should be covered with a thin layer of soil. It blooms from July to September. It requires a sunny location, sheltered from strong and cold winds. Agapanthuses should be regularly watered with fertilizers, preferably for flowering plants. These are available in all garden stores.
They look beautiful on balconies and terraces.
Agapanthuses are perfect for cut flowers in vases.
