The Chinese magnolia vine (Schisandra chinensis) is a climbing plant native to the Far East. Its leaves are green, shiny, and elliptical in shape. The leaves drop fairly early, turning a vibrant yellow color. The flowers are small, white, and have a pleasant fragrance. It blooms in May, and the fruits, in the form of red berries, appear in August, forming clusters up to 10 cm long. These fruits are rich in vitamins such as vitamin C, carotene, organic acids, and tocopherol.

The Chinese magnolia vine begins to bear fruit 4-6 years after planting.

The fruits of the Chinese magnolia vine can be consumed in various ways, either raw or as dried berries, added to snacks, or brewed into an infusion. The fruit makes excellent jams, preserves, tinctures, and wines. It is also used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. In herbal medicine, its leaves, stems, and bark are used, as they are rich in essential oils.

Health benefits: it affects cancer cells, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders, helps with type II diabetes, supports proper pancreatic function, and also helps with acute liver damage and alleviates symptoms of menopause.

The vine is suitable for pergolas, gazebos, fences, or any place where it has the opportunity to climb. It needs a sunny or lightly shaded position, sheltered from strong and cold winds. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil rich in minerals.

When it comes to pruning the Chinese magnolia vine, it involves removing old, dried stems and weak, thin shoots early in the spring (March/April). We also cut back trailing shoots that have no flower buds, flowers, or fruits. Last year's growth should be pruned above 12-15 well-formed buds.

The Chinese magnolia vine is fully frost-resistant.
